Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy technique that helps individuals heal from symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Originally developed to treat trauma and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), EMDR has since been proven effective for a wide range of psychological issues including depression, anxiety, and negative or limiting self-beliefs.

how it works

During EMDR sessions, clients systematically work through distressing memories and beliefs while utilizing bilateral stimulation, typically through side-to-side eye movements or alternating handheld pulsators guided by the therapist. This bilateral stimulation is believed to activate the brain’s natural healing processes, facilitating the processing of memories and reducing their lingering impact.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy:

  1. Effective Trauma Treatment: EMDR is highly effective in reducing the symptoms of trauma, including flashbacks, nightmares, and emotional distress related to past experiences.

  2. Rapid Results: Many clients experience significant improvement in a relatively short period compared to traditional talk therapies.

  3. Holistic Approach: EMDR integrates emotional, cognitive, and physiological elements of distress, addressing the whole person in treatment.

  4. Versatility: Beyond trauma, EMDR has been successfully used to treat anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, and other mental health conditions.

  5. Safety: EMDR is a structured therapy that ensures clients feel safe and supported throughout the process of revisiting distressing memories.

  6. Lasting Change: By processing memories more adaptively, EMDR helps clients experience lasting relief from symptoms and improved overall well-being.

History Taking and Preparation:

We will begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment to understand your history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. Together, we will establish a trusting therapeutic relationship and discuss how EMDR can help address your specific concerns.

Resource Development:

Before delving into traumatic memories, your therapist will help you identify and strengthen internal resources. These may include feelings of safety, coping skills, and positive memories. These resources serve as anchors to ensure emotional stability during more challenging phases of EMDR.

Target Identification:

Together we will identify specific memories, images, beliefs, and sensations related to past experiences that continue to cause distress in your daily life. We will work together to develop a treatment plan for strategically addressing these targeted memories in a safe and effective way.

Desensitization:

In this phase, you will focus on a distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This can be achieved through side-to-side eye movements, pulsators, or sounds delivered through headphones alternating left and right, or taps on your hands.

The bilateral stimulation is believed to activate the brain's natural information processing mechanisms, facilitating the integration of traumatic memories into adaptive memory networks.

In subsequent sessions, we will review progress and identify any new material that may have emerged. EMDR sessions continue until the targeted memories have been processed and resolved to your satisfaction.

Installation

As the distress associated with the memory diminishes, I will help you reinforce positive beliefs and sensations that you wish to replace old, negative beliefs with.

This phase strengthens the adaptive resolution of the memory and enhances feelings of self-worth and empowerment.

EMDR therapy is a collaborative process that respects your individual pace and readiness. It provides a structured framework for safely addressing and resolving past trauma, leading to enhanced emotional resilience and improved overall well-being.

Body Scan and Closure:

At the end of each session, I will guide you through a process to ensure you feel grounded and present. You may also engage in relaxation techniques or mindfulness exercises to help integrate the processing that has occurred.

After completing the EMDR treatment protocol, you and your therapist will work together to integrate the insights and changes that have occurred. Follow-up sessions may be scheduled as needed to support ongoing healing and growth.
